FRUIT HEIGHTS — Sean Powers is ready to fight in the big leagues.
The Fruit Heights resident recently signed a three-fight deal with Bellator MMA, the second-largest mixed martial arts promotion in the U.S.
Powers’ first fight for the organization will be on Feb. 21 at the Maverick Center in West Valley as part of a preliminary card for the Bellator Featherweight Championships.
“This is what I’ve been waiting for since I started doing MMA,” said Powers. “Hopefully, this is just the beginning.”
Powers will be fighting David “Dangerous” Allred, who is based in Orem. According to the MMA ranking site sherdog.com, Allred’s record is 11 wins and 4 losses. Powers’ record is 5 wins and 3 losses.
Still, Powers isn’t worried.
“I’m just going to stick to what I do best,” he said.
He credits fellow MMA fighter Rad Martinez for giving him the opportunity. One of Powers’ training partners, Martinez will be fighting for the featherweight title in the upcoming match.
When a combination of illness and other circumstances forced the championships to be delayed, Bellator moved the fight to Utah to make things easier on Martinez. Powers said that Bellator signed him solely on Martinez’s say-so.
“He means a lot to them,” said Powers, who added that he’s flattered by his fellow fighter’s vote of confidence. “It just shows what he thinks of me and where my level’s at as far as competing.”
His training helps keep him on that level. Powers regularly travels to Orem to work with the other fighters at The Pit Elevated, a group that also includes well-known MMA fighter Brock “The Machine” Jardine.
“Our team just keeps doing great,” said Powers. “We work so hard, and we’re always training.”
