BOUNTIFUL — The high school hockey postseason got underway last Wednesday for the Viewmont Vikings hockey tea.

They took down Sky View 6-3 in the first round thanks to a four-goal, come-from-behind victory.

After struggling with their last three games, going 1-2 in that time, the Vikings were able to take out their frustrations on Sky View thanks to solid conditioning, said Vikings coach Brian Acord.

“Playoff games have changed because the periods are now 15 minutes instead of 12,” he said. “That tough month of conditioning paid off, and the additional minutes gave us time to come back in the game.”

With the additional nine minutes added to each playoff game, the Vikings were able to take charge in the final seven minutes of last Wednesday’s game by scoring four goals.

P.J. Tanner, the team’s leading scorer this season, scored only one goal but had four assists in the game, and freshman Coalyn Browning scored a pair of goals.

Browning’s goals were scored roughly 20 seconds apart, and was the spark that ignited the comeback effort.

“The entire team played very well, but we made a slight change in some of our lines and that really helped us get on the offensive,” said Acord. “We added Browning to the top of the line with Tanner and another freshman, Alex Barrus. That move paid off for us.”

Barrus had the most balanced game of the three on that line, scoring two goals and three assists for a five-point game.

In the end, Barrus had a hand in five of Viewmont’s six goals.

“It was a hard-fought victory and we’ll take it,” said Acord. “They’ve done well this entire season.”

In other playoff action, Davis County Independent won its first playoff game over Metro Varsity, 8-6, and is scheduled to play again Tuesday night against Salt Lake Independent.

The Vikings took on Park City Wednesday night. The score was not available as of press time, but will be posted on Davisclipper.com.
