LAYTON — A Layton man died Monday when his ice and snow-laden carport collapsed on him.
John Eaves, 50, died in the accident, which happened about 9:15 a.m. on Monday at his home in the 1600 East block of 2050 North. He was the manager of the Costa Vida restaurant in South Ogden.
Eaves was considering how to remove the build up of ice and snow from the north-facing carport when the weight of the snow caused it to collapse, said Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton.
The carport had recently been added to the side of an existing garage.
Rescuers from the Layton fire department used a jack to try and raise the roof off Eaves, but were unsuccessful.
Eaves’ family told authorities that he and his wife had discussed the creaking noises coming from the carport. He went out to check on it about the same time his wife left for work.
