NORTH SALT LAKE — Two men were injured Wednesday morning after a dump truck lost its brakes while traveling down Eagle Ridge Drive.
The accident occurred when the driver of a 2013 Peterbilt dump truck lost control as he was heading west down the steep road, said North Salt Lake Lt. Troy Johnson.
The driver tried to slow the truck by down-shifting, but the truck continued to pick up speed. The truck went over the curb into the parking lot of an office complex. It took out some landscaping then rolled, dumping dirt and rocks and hitting a parked pickup truck, Johnson said.
The driver of the dump truck had to extricated from the vehicle.
He sustained back and upper body injuries, and was taken to Intermountain Medical Center, Johnson said. He is expected to be OK.
A second man sustained minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital. He jumped out of the vehicle and had started running when the pickup was hit, Johnson said.
“There was quite a bit of damage,” Johnson said.
The road was closed during the cleanup, but was reopened by early afternoon, Johnson said.
The Utah Highway Patrol assisted in the truck inspection. The preliminary finding as that the dump truck’s brakes had failed.
