OGDEN – Both the Viewmont Vikings and Davis Darts boys’ basketball teams had the chance to meet each other in the semi-finals of the 5A playoffs.
Instead, they were both eliminated from the playoffs after Viewmont lost to Brighton and Davis lost to Lone Peak, respectively in Wednesday night games at the state tournament.
Viewmont lost to Bright 69-58 and Lone Peak beat Davis 84-50.
For the Vikings, who took the floor first Wednesday night, McKay Johnson and Michael Steinicke had strong performances, scoring 18 and 11 points, respectively. Despite the team’s reputation for playing strong games, Viewmont fell behind early by allowing 23 first-quarter points.
The rough first quarter proved to be the difference in the end, as the Vikings were able to outscore Brighton in both the second and third quarters. They were still behind entering the fourth quarter. The Vikings best offensive quarter was the fourth, when they scored 19 points, but allowed 24 to Brighton.
Jarom Tye was held in check by Brighton’s defense Wednesday night, scoring only eight points and pulling down seven rebounds.
Davis’ game against Lone Peak was a near no-contest from start to finish, The nationally ranked Knights scored 26 first-quarter points and never looked back. Led by Talon Shumway, T.J. Haws and others, the Knights hit 12 3-pointers and shot 17-of-41 from the floor overall.
By the end of the first half, the Darts were down 49-29, and never gained any momentum in the second half. The Darts’ offense didn’t quit in the game, but were held to five points in the fourth quarter as the Knights put the game away.
Jesse Wade scored 13 points for the Darts in the loss. Shumway scored a game-high 25 points, and Erik Mika scored 19 points with 10 rebounds in the win.
Lone Peak and Brighton will face each other in the semi-finals Friday night at the Dee Events Center.
