FARMINGTON — Jeremy Hauck was found not guilty by reason of insanity on Monday in the death of his mother, Laura Hauck, 51, seven years ago.

Second District Judge John Morris ordered Hauck remain in custody at the Utah State Hospital for 15 years to life, where he will continue to be treated for schizophrenia, paranoia and a delusional disorder.

Hauck, now 24, stands accused of killing his mother and stuffing her body inside a freezer on Aug. 4, 2006. Her body was found in the basement of a Bountiful condominium the two lived in.

Following the murder, investigators said Hauck stole his mother’s car and drove to Montana, where he was arrested two days later

Hauck’s attorney Todd Utzinger said Hauck believed his mother was a “replica,” and was not his mother at the time of his death.

Hauck has been at the state hospital since January 2008. In November 2010, Morris ordered that Hauck be forcibly medicated. Last year, Utzinger filed a motion seeking an insanity plea for his client.
