BOUNTIFUL — It took nearly 100 minutes and two overtimes, but a golden goal by Viewmont’s Zach Beckman in the 96th minute of Tuesday’s game against Woods Cross helped the Vikings improve to 2-1 in preseason play.

“I was pleased with the effort, but we have to find ways to score goals,” said Vikings’ coach Dave Wigham. “You can control the ball all you want but if you can’t score, you’re going to be in trouble.”

Mike Johnson was the first Vikings’ player to score in the game, knocking in a header in the 53rd minute to give Viewmont the initial lead. The goal was deflected off a Woods Cross player before crossing the goal line, but Johnson was credited with the goal anyway.

A combination of Woods Cross’ defense, and excellent goalkeeping by Taylor Kennard, helped keep the score at 1-0 until Wildcats’ senior Ethan Cope scored the game-tying goal in extra time. Cope’s goal came on a free kick following a foul by Viewmont, and came moments before the whistle blew to send the game into overtime.

“We knew that Cope has a bullet for a shot, just like our Beckman,” said Wigham. “You give him a free kick from that range and chances are he’s going to score.”

After a scoreless first overtime, Woods Cross nearly had a chance to end the game in the second overtime. However, the team’s goal was taken off due to an offside penalty, and Beckman scored on a penalty kick in the 96th minute to end the game.

“I like the work ethic, the hustle, and they’re learning what we’re coaching them,” said Wigham of the team’s positive aspects through three games. “We did much better today than we did against Bountiful as far as what we wanted to get accomplished. I like the way they’re listening, taking the coaching and improving.”

Bountiful scores first, second half goals in 2-1 win over Murray

Caleb Maynard and Jake Haddock each scored a goal for the Braves Tuesday afternoon against Murray, helping Bountiful pick up its second consecutive win to start the season.

Haddock scored the first goal for Bountiful in the first half to give the Braves the lead. Maynard scored the team’s second half goal and held off a late charge by Murray to tie the game. Both players scored their first goals of the season in the win.

Davis shuts out Juan Diego in 2-0 win

Davis Owen and Tyler Bishop each scored single goals for Davis Monday afternoon, and goalkeeper Taylor Bell picked up a shutout at the net as the Darts improve to 2-0 on the season.

Bishop and Owen both scored their first goals of the season.
