Pornography has turned teens into ‘generation of aliens,’ author says in new book

BOUNTIFUL — A Bountiful man who has spent most of his life fighting pornography has written “A Generation of Aliens,” which discusses pornography addiction among adolescents.

John L. Harmer, chairman of the Lighted Candle Society, will make the book available for purchase online at thelightedcandlesociety.org on Monday, April 1 for $22.25.

Harmer wrote the book based on his assessment of the impact of pornography on today’s youth. He believes teenagers are viewing sexually explicit photos and videos on their myriad electronic devices.

“In the past 10 years, there have been literally dozens of highly credible studies regarding the impact upon the adolescent brain of graphic images of sex and violence,” Harmer said. “All of these studies have confirmed that the effect of repeated viewing of these images is to produce a compulsive-obessive need to see ever more graphic images. The ultimate effect of this addiction is to create a personality that is ‘alien’ to the society and culture in which we live.”

Harmer has spent the past 49 years trying to thwart the production and spread of pornography, he said. He spent two years writing the book.

“Our target audience are the parents with young families,” he said. “Since I first joined this battle, I have seen pornography move from the back alleys of San Francisco and New York into the living rooms of America.”

He added that the battleground is now the home.

Harmer intends the book not only for the parents of young families, but also other community leaders.

Pornography viewing by adolescents develops a calloused attitude toward violence and a contempt for women, Harmer said.

Adolescent boys are conditioned to believe that the only value of a female is as an object of sexual satisfaction, he said:

“When these attitudes are instilled within their brains, these aliens are not capable of forming lasting family relationships.”

Using the metaphor of the “wheat and the tares” from the New Testament, Harmer’s book concludes that unless this problem is solved, the essential foundation of the U.S. constitutional republic will be destroyed.

“That foundation is one of a people whose moral values make it possible for them to be governed by law and therefore to be free,” he said. “A society filed with unbridled passions and violence can never be free. They can only be governed by tyranny.”
