BOUNTIFUL — Jensen Scruggs, an eighth-grade student at Millcreek Junior High School, has been plucked from the South Davis Terrapins to represent the U.S. on its eighth grade and under water polo team.
She was one of only two water polo players to be selected on the Olympic Development Team. The other will come from outside the county.
Scruggs recently swam for South Davis’ Tsunami swim team, centered in south Davis County. Scruggs only swam for one year before joining the South Davis Terrapins, a water polo team that began its third season recently and plays all its home matches at the recreation center.
Scruggs’ mother was the one who suggested she give the sport a try, and is now in her second season with the local team.
The Olympic Development Team (ODT) helps develop athletes in many different sports. She was selected along with several other water polo players from her zone. Her zone consists of players from Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and New Mexico, all of which comprise the Mountain Zone.
Scruggs, along with the rest of her teammates from her zone, backed up their selection to the team by finishing in first place in a recent U.S. ODP tournament.
The Terrapins have been growing as a program as well. In only its third year, the team already has a varsity boys’ and girls’ team, as well as a junior varsity boys’ team.
The teams, comprised of players from Bountiful, Woods Cross and Viewmont high schools, as well as various other local junior high schools, is being coached by James Keddington, who played water polo for a high school in California.
Jess Jones, another coach for the Terrapins, played water polo for Kearns High School.
