But it will take time before brick and mortar facilities take place, as has happened in the last few years in Salt Lake City, in particular.
County Commissioner Louenda Downs, co-chairs a homelessness committee with MaryAnn Nielson of the Davis School District.
“We talked about how Safe Harbor (domestic violence shelter) also does homeless coordination on jail issues, with some of the women they work with,” Downs said.
Assisting those released from jail has been among topics the group has discussed – a topic most people don’t think of when considering homelessness.
To that end, legal technicalities are being worked out so that funds can be distrusted to appropriate agencies who assist the homeless, Downs said.
About $40,000 was donated by the public at last September’s county gala, which benefited homelessness in the county. Those funds are being used, along with others being sought, to make a dent in the homeless situation in the county.
Nielson, who deals with homelessness in the school district, has said more than 1,000 children are technically homeless – not having a permanent home, often moving three or more times in one year.
