NORTH SALT LAKE — A man has died from injuries suffered in a crash of two motorcycles early Sunday morning on the off-ramp of I-15 at 2600 South.

Matthew McCullough, 40, of Layton, died at the University of Utah Medical Center late Sunday night as a result of head injuries suffered in the crash.

Just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, McCullough was northbound on I-15 prior to the off-ramp behind a motorcycle driven by Jesse Dirate, 35, of West Bountiful, according to a Utah Highway Patrol report.

Dirate appeared to be following too closely, the report said. When McCullough started to brake, Dirate was unable to slow in time and struck the back of McCullough’s motorcycle.

McCullough was taken by medical helicopter to the University of Utah. He was not wearing a helmet, a UHP spokesman said. Dirate was treated at the scene and released. He was wearing a helmet.

Several lanes of I-15 were closed for about an hour and a half.
