BOUNTIFUL — In their opening Region 2 series against Kearns, the Viewmont Vikings came away with two wins behind the stellar pitching of Isaac Evans and Brendan Jensen.
Evans’ 12-strikeout performance in the first game last Wednesday helped the Vikings shutout the Cougars 4-0, and after a 5-4 loss Thursday, Jensen pitched 5 shutout innings of his own in a 2-1 win.
Viewmont 4, Kearns 0
The Vikings took the lead in a scoreless game when Evans doubled in the fourth inning, and Justin Boucher singled to score the first run of the game. Travis Henderson doubled to score Boucher later, and Viewmont added two more in the fifth to account for all four runs in the game.
After a walk to Davis Madsen, a single by Parker Taggart and Boucher being hit by a pitch to load the bases, Weston Sandberg singled to score one and Henderson was hit by a pitch to plate Viewmont’s final run.
Kearns 5, Viewmont 4
In the second game of the series, held Thursday, Kearns used 13 hits on their way to a 5-4 victory. Viewmont kept the game close by rallying in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game, but Kearns scored its final run in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.
Viewmont 2, Kearns 1
Brendan Jensen pitched the finale for the Vikings, and shut down Kearns by mixing his pitches and using a big breaking curve ball as his main weapon in a 2-1 pitching duel.
After the Cougars threatened in the first, Jensen silenced them over the next four innings as the Vikings taking a 2-0 lead.
Davis Madsen scored in the second inning on a throwing error, and Weston Sandberg scored in the fifth on a Parker Taggart double.
Matt Burt replaced Jensen in the sixth inning, earning the save with two solid innings of relief.
