BOUNTIFUL— A man from Kenya who lives in Bountiful, has been recognized as the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus at LDS Business College.

Shaka M. Kariuki chose to live in Utah after finishing a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oakland, Calif. In 1991. His missionary friends had told him about the college, and he wanted to learn and was willing to work for the tuition, according to a press release from the college.

Kariuki has since earned several degrees, culminating in a master’s degree in government from Harvard University. He is one of three partners and the co-Chief Investment Officer of Kuramo Capital Management, LLC in New York City where he co-leads the company’s investments and strategic direction, the release reports.

“From the beginning I have set up goals, thinking, ‘This is where I want to be in 10 and 20 years,’” he said. “And then I just walk backwards and asked, ‘What will it take to get there?’”
