Scientists have identified a gene found in African
American Alzheimer’s Disease patients that is similar to genes found in Alzheimer’s patients of European decent, according to a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
African-Americans with the gene were more likely than their white peers to acquire late-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
The findings mean that researchers can better understand what causes the disease, according to a news release about it. The findings “also may have major implications for developing targets for genetic testing, prevention, and treatment,” the authors write.
