Infant mortality lower than ever

In 2010, about 25,000 babies in the U.S. died before their first birthday. The rate of 6.1 deaths per 1,000 live births has declined by more than a third since the 1990s, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Infant mortality rates in the U.S. remai nhigher than in most other developed countries, according to the center, and racial disparities exist. For African-Americans, the rate was 11.6 deaths per 1,000 births and for American Indians, 7.6 deaths.
