SUNSET — Janet raised three wonderful children of her own and opened her home to other mothers’ children as a daycare provider for more than 30 years.

When she talks about struggles of motherhood, however, she only speaks of what her own mother went through.

“The hardest thing that I’ve seen my mother go through was no washing machine, no running water,” she said with what remains of her Scottish accent. “I don’t know how she ever raised all of us,” referring to herself and her 10 siblings.

The fact that Janet has never had a clothes dryer is all but irrelevant to her.

Janet no longer babysits, but saw the need for what is known in Scotland as a “lollipop lady” at the elementary school behind her home.

She volunteered. The job entails holding up a stop sign to help students cross safely.

When Janet isn’t at the school near her home, she takes a beloved friend for walks and quietly picks up trash all along the route.
