Pandering to immigrants will exacerbate problem

Editor,

On a Sunday morning in May of 2011, my son of 31 years left for work, never to return. Minutes later, while waiting at a stop light, he was struck by drunken Mexican national traveling 75 mph. He died eight days later.

If my son’s death were an isolated DUI, gone horribly wrong, then he could be written off as another tragic victim of drunk driving. But it is more than that. In congress and the states, legislators struggle with immigration and it’s impact on society. This Saturday, the GOP will hold a convention in Sandy, Utah and will consider the adoption of the Utah Compact. Cries of “humanity” toward undocumented workers fill the air, as somehow this help lead to a solution to this perplexing problem. However, consider the following: First, it is the primary, Constitutional duty of all law enforcement officers, local and federal, from the President on down, to protect the lives and property of all law abiding citizens in so far as their jurisdictions allow. Second, local governments and private enterprises should not be compelled to subsidize education, food, medicine, etc., for undocumented individuals. Federal assistance should be temporary С medicine, food, shelter, and transportation to the country of origin. Third, documented/ undocumented immigrants violating our laws or the terms of their status should be subject to prosecution and deportation. Fourth, the Utah Compact focuses almost exclusively on humane treatment for the immigrants and their families.

But what of the innocent? What about humane treatment for them? What about the lives and families that are shattered when loved ones are maimed or killed by immigrants who invade our country and violate our laws? Pandering to the undocumented will only exacerbate the problem. The Compact is bad for the GOP. It is bad for Utah.
