NORTH SALT LAKE — A Thursday night fire has been forced to leave home following a fire in their basement apartment on Thursday night.
The unit was in the basement of a business that has been closed for several months.
The fire occurred at Souties, 180 N. Highway 89. It was called in at 6:40 p.m., according to Deputy South Davis Metro Fire Agency Chief Jeff Bassett.
The owners of the business had been in the building earlier in the day and smelled something like plastic burning, they told officials. They were unable to find a cause and left.
During the evening, the renters saw smoke coming from the heating vents. They went outside and could see flames on the main floor and immediately called 911, Bassett said.
Crews quickly put out the flames. However, because of smoke and water damage, the family was displaced.
Bassett estimated the damage at $20,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It started in the kitchen.
“The most important thing is to call 911 immediately,” Bassett said.
The fact the residents called 911 before investigating for themselves helped to minimize the damage, he said.
