BOUNTIFUL — It is a different type of canvas, said Maria Sue Hyer, as she knelt, blending colors of chalk on the sidewalk.

“It’s fun to be able to show your artwork and have people walk by and talk to you,” she said.

Hyer was one of more than 100 artists Р some professional, some first-timers Р to create temporary art on the sidewalks of Bountiful’s Main Street last weekend.

Working in front of the post office, Elizabeth Stanley created a scene celebrating the magic of music.

An artist by trade, Stanley usually works in oils.

“It’s a good cause,” she said, of the sponsoring Joy Foundation’s work, to help at-risk youth. “It’s a fun place to be.”

Weather cooperated for the first days of the festival, allowing artists time to complete their work, which included fantasy scenes, animals, landscapes, people, cartoon characters and more.

Plastic and duct tape saved some pieces through the worst of the rain, which started Friday and continued through a good chunk of Saturday.

“It’s an unusual medium,” said Cleve Rodebush as he worked to complete a southwestern-themed piece. “Even if it gets rained off within the same day or a day or two, I like coming down and watching the families and kids walk by and talk about it.”
