BOUNTIFUL – An asteroid that is sparking some debate due to its proximity to earth has led to a discussion that will be held on Friday, May 31 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time, or noon, locally.

Scientists said there is no cause for alarm as the asteroid’s pass will “still be 3.6 million miles from our planet,” according to an email sent to the Clipper. That distance is approximately 15 times farther from us than the Earth is from the moon.

The “We the Geeks” Google+ discussion will have guest speakers Bill Nye, former astronaut Ed Lu, NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver, and several other known scientists.

Those interested in joining the discussion must RSVP before the event begins, which can be done at whitehouse.gov/webform/lets-talk-about-asteroids. The discussion will be held at plus.google.com/+whitehouse.
