SALT LAKE CITY — The Administrative Office of the Courts will conduct an Access and Fairness Survey this summer to gauge the experience of people doing business with the Utah State Courts.

“The court will use the data to ensure the courts are accessible and that individuals are being treated fairly by the court,” said Utah State Court Administrator Dan Becker in a press release. “Feedback from the public about the court’s performance will help us provide better service.”

The survey will be administered in June and July. Responses will by collected on one day at each of 38 court sites throughout the state.

The data will be collected at 2nd District Court in Layton on June 11, in Farmington on June 12 and in Bountiful on June 27.

Every person at the courthouse that day is eligible to participate except court employees or those visiting an agency other than the court. The survey will be administered as people leave the courthouse.

Past surveys have shown that the most people have a positive perception of their court visit, think Utah courts were accessible and that court employees are respectful and responsive in working with the public, a press release from the Administrative Office of the Courts said.

Past surveys also identified areas where performance fell short of public’s expectations:

Respondents wanted more information about the work of the courts and self-represented litigant resources.

Some also reported dissatisfaction with the time needed to complete their courthouse visits.

The courts have increased the amount of information and type of services available on the court website and have expanded self-help services in response to the survey results.
