KAYSVILLE — A Salt Lake City motorcycle police officer was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after a piece of metal debris on southbound I-15 just north of Kaysville caused him to go down.

The accident happened about 2:20 p.m. in the HOV lane according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.

The officer was part of a group of 22 riders who were on a training ride.

An officer near the front of the group hit a piece of metal, believed to be a piece of a refrigeration unit. Several motorcycles took evasive action, but a piece of debris was flipped back and was hit by a second motorcycle, causing the rider to go down, Johnson said. A third motorcyclists hit the debris but he did not crash.

The officer, whose name was not released, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
