Holly Refinery is just shuffling pollution to trucks

Brigham Young said, “You are here commencing anew Й The soil, the air, the water are all pure and healthy. Do not suffer them to become polluted with wickedness. Strive to preserve the elements from being contaminated by the filthy, wicked conduct and sayings of those who pervert the intelligence God has bestowed upon the human family.”

For Brigham, moral and physical cleanliness and pollution are no more to be separated than mind and body. Many other of his statements say similar things.

Recently, Woods Cross City has vowed to reduce the dry cleaning solvents that are in our drinking water by running it through activated carbon filters, and leaders should be commended for that.

Added to that, Holly Refinery sent me a flyer on how much they were reducing the pollution that its newly enlarged facility emits to the air in Woods Cross and West Bountiful, and they should be commended for any efforts they have made in that direction.

Shortly after that good news, I hear on TV that there was a Harvard Medical School study on autism in children, claiming that it was linked to mercury and diesel truck pollution.

So cleaning up the drinking water is good for our children. And Holly Refinery’s reducing its emissions is also good. However, I attended one of the Holly Refinery public information sessions and was informed that the number of diesel trucks on 500 South, which runs between Woods Cross and West Bountiful, will increase greatly. The reason for the increase in diesel truck pollution near our children is a result of Holly Refinery’s expansion to accommodate “black wax” coming from the Uintah Basin. Evidently, the black wax solidifies unless kept hot and cannot be brought by railroad and pipelines, as crude can.

It brings to mind the saying, “you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all the people all of the time.”

Holly Refinery has only passed the pollution to the trucking industry and our children are still breathing the carcinogens.

Dixie Weeks,

Woods Cross
