CLEARFIELD — Police believe that a shooting in Clearfield was an accident and that the gun had been stolen.
A 12-year-old girl was in satisfactory condition a day after police say her brother accidently shot her.
The shooting took place at the family home in the 200 North block of 360 West in Clearfield, according to a Clearfield Police press release.
When officers arrived, they found the 12-year-old victim with a wound in the back of her shoulder. The bullet exited the front arm. Police say the girl was conscious and breathing and was able to communicate with the officers.
The girl was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Medical Center, where she remained on Friday.
The victim’s 16-year-old brother had a handgun police say he stole in an auto burglary about a year ago, Assistant Clearfield Police Chief Mike Stenquist said in a press release on Friday. That burglary allegedly occurred in Clinton. Stenquist said Clearfield police are working with Clinton police to determine the rightful owner of the gun.
Detectives are screening the case with the Davis County Sheriff’s Office to determine what charges may be filed against the brother.
