WOODS CROSS – The annual draw for the buck deer permits may be over, but the chance to get a permit isn’t.

More than 3,300 permits are still available for this year’s big game hunts, beginning later this fall.

About 1,400 archery and 1,800 general muzzleloader permits were not taken at the draw, giving those who didn’t get a permit the chance to purchase one.

The permits will go on sale at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 11.

Permits are still available at nine of Utah’s 30 deer hunting units. The units are specifically named at go.usa.gov/dno. Permit numbers per unit can be seen at wildlife.utah.gov/dwr/hunting/hunting-information/big-game/562-2013-remaining-biggame.html.

All remaining permits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Permits can be purchased three ways: through wildlife.utah.gov, at the nearest Utah Division of Wildlife Resources office, or at hunting license agencies.

Also going on sale that day will be the youth archery permits.

To qualify for a permit, the youth hunter must be 18 years old or younger on Aug. 17, the first day of the archery hunt. Hunters must also be graduates of Utah’s Hunter Education program.

Permits can be obtained the same way, through a division office, online, or by visiting an agency.

The Utah Wildlife Board approved the special youth archery permits at a meeting in May. The number of permits ranges from a low of eight permits for the Plateau, Thousands Lakes unit to a high of 355 permits for the Central Mountains, Manti/San Rafael unit, according to division.
