A good sequel is often hard to find. All too often, the next chapter follows the original story too close, offering nothing more than a carbon copy with a few extra bonus laughs. Despicable Me was such an original film I thought it would be hard to make sequel that didn't fall into some of those same traps.

When we last left Gru (Steve Carell), he'd sworn off being an evil scientist and adopted Edith, Agnes and Margo (Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher, and Miranda Cosgrove), three adorable orphaned sisters who help him find a purpose greater than world domination. As a new father and leader of a hoarde of miniature alien-like minions, Gru tries to make his way in the world by manufacturing jams and jellies.

At about the same time, another evil genius has developed a new serum that can alter any creature into a monster-like killing machine. The presence of the new evil prompts the “Anti Villain League” (AVL) to recruit Gru and help thwart the threat. The woman in charge of recruiting Gru into the AVL is Lucy (Kristen Wiig), a geeky, yet resourceful agent who finds a lot in common with him. Gru resists at first, but eventually joins Lucy in her quest to find the perpetrators of the evil serum. Gru's minions also help out.

Eventually, Gru and Lucy begin to have feelings for each other as the man behind the evil plot gets closer to complete domination.

Despicable Me 2 is an enjoyable movie that is fun for the whole family, and it avoids the tendency to borrow too much from the original. The little girls are even more adorable in longing for a motherly influence that is eqaul to their beloved Gru. The minions even expand their own special brand of humor.

So, go see Despicable Me 2 and enjoy its fresh take on world domination through good friends and family. You won't be disappointed.
