KAYSVILLE – Each year in Kaysville, hundreds of people gather for a 10-mile bike ride.

The ride, though fun, is meant to be a charity event called “Pedal Away Parkinson’s,” and will be held this year on Saturday, July 20 at Kaysville’s Gailey Park.

The park is located at 200 S. 300 West.

The Utah Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association is inviting anyone interested to participate to raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease, a neurological disorder that is chronic and progressive.

“This is a fun way to raise awareness for PD and showing support for all caregivers, friends and family members that we support them,” said organizer Meredith Smith in a press release.

Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year, not including the cases that go undetected.

Of those 60,000, roughly five percent are diagnosed before the age of 50.

This year’s honoree for the bike ride will be Steve Matz. Matz will be participating in the 10-mile ride at the age of 70.

The ride will begin and end at Gailey Park. There will be live music, free activities, a silent auction and prize drawings for a new mountain bike and other prizes.

All participants will receive a ride T-shirt and a pass to Kaysville Sportsplex.  All proceeds go to APDA Utah Chapter.

Pre-registration is being accepted online at utahapda.org/pedalawayparkinsons/Home.html.

The cost for registrants before July 12 is $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12 years old.

A downloadable registration form is also available on the website.
