As part of that effort, the annual Davis Beautification and Garden Walk is gearing up for its second year. The walk, which is sponsored by the Davis County Clipper, is currently accepting nominations for the most beautiful home gardens in Davis County.
“After traveling the world, I love enjoying the beauty that surrounds us right in this area,” said North Salt Lake Mayor Shanna Schaefermeyer. “Any time we do anything to add to that, whether in community gardens or in our own yards, we really do enhance what is here.”
The registration deadline for the walk is May 8, with the walk currently scheduled for May 29-30. A team of judges will also be reviewing all of the nominations to determine this year’s winners, which will later be featured in a special section of the Clipper that will be published this summer. Special city-based judging committees may also look over the nominees for each city to determine their own awards.
“We all benefit when people take pride in their yards,” said Woods Cross City Mayor Kent Parry. “It creates a pleasant experience for people, whether they’re on the walk or just enjoying their neighbors yards.”
Before any of this happens, however, people have to bring these yards to our attention. The nomination forms, which people can fill out for their own homes as well as their neighbors, are available at the several Davis County city offices, through city websites, and at the Clipper offices.
The forms offer several specific areas of nomination for a particular yard — front, back, natural garden, trees and shrubs, and overall (more than one category can be selected). The nominated homeowners can also decide whether or not they want their homes included on the self-guided walk.
Anyone in Davis County is welcome to nominate a yard, which they then return as soon as possible to the Clipper or the city hall building in the same city as the garden.
The Davis Beautification and Garden Walk, which is currently in its second year, is being modeled after the one that has been active in Woods Cross for the last several years.
“We as a city appreciate the efforts of our citizens when they participate in either the city or the Clipper garden walks,” said Parry. “It shows a sense of community and character.”
