WOODS CROSS – Both the Davis Darts and Woods Cross Wildcats opened the girls’ soccer season Tuesday night with a game under the lights at Woods Cross High School.
After a scoreless draw sent the game into overtime, sophomore defender Mia Stoddard scored the Darts’ first goal of the season in the 89th minute to give Davis the 1-0 victory.
“This isn’t your typical 5A versus 4A soccer game where you see one team dominate the other,” said assistant coach Eric Landon. “Woods Cross will be a very good team this season, and they showed it out there tonight.”
Eden Jacobsen of Woods Cross let an early opportunity to take the lead slip away after her shot was saved by a diving Sara Beecher. Beecher and her opposing goalkeeper, Aubree Peterson, both played well at the net by making diving stops during several points in each half.
Madi Garlock had an early opportunity to get the Darts ahead at the beginning of the second half after a defensive lapse by Woods Cross. Her shot went by a diving Peterson, but sailed wide of the net. Both teams remained scoreless until the closing moments of the first overtime, when Stoddard sailed her shot just out of reach of Peterson for the 1-0 win.
Both teams also exhibited some physicality during the game; something Landon said isn’t unusual for the first game of the season.
“It’s the first game, and a lot of these girls play each other on the club level, so there might have been a little banter going on as well,” he said. “It wasn’t physical to the point that (the game) became dangerous, but there was some hard play by both sides.”
Beecher earned her first shutout of the season at the net. The Darts will play Bountiful Thursday at Angel Park, and Woods Cross will host Viewmont.
Game times are 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
