NORTH SALT LAKE — Communities for Clean Air is holding a second protest against medical incinerator Stericycle on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 5:30 p.m.

The protest will take place in front of the Stericycle building at 90 N. 1100 West, at the entrance to the Foxboro neighborhood.

The group plans to serve Stericycle with an “eviction notice to emphasize the community’s determination to evict this polluter out of our neighborhood,” according to a press release from the group.

Since the last anti-Stericycle protest in early July, residents have carefully watched the smokestacks of the medical device incinerator for unusual emissions, such as the black smoke that rises to the sky when the plant is on “bypass” during start-up times. The Utah Division of Air Quality and Stericycle’s permit allows these, but the lack of regulation concerning the bypass events concerns the neighbors.

“There should not be an incinerator in a residential neighborhood,” said Natasha Hincks, an organizer of the group. “Our kids should not have to be breathing in dioxin, mercury and other toxins when they are playing in their own yards.”

Communities for Clean air really needs to decide on a unified message. Some from that group just want Stericycle to stop burning. Some want Stericycle to burn within their limits. And some just want Stericycle to shut down and move out.

If you want a strong voice - get together, choose a single spokesperson with a single message and move forward. Otherwise, it just sounds like a bunch of people with NIMBY complaints (Not In My BackYard)
