KAYSVILLE – The Davis Darts volleyball team was one of the most powerful teams in the state in 2012.

Having 10 strong seniors with state playoff experience, the Lady Darts won 32 games and came to within a single match of earning back-to-back state titles.

That was then, and this is now.

The Darts will be a younger team this season, without question. Only four seniors will line up and hit the floor on a consistent basis, and the addition of Viewmont in Region 1 will make things more difficult as Davis prepares to defend its region title for the fourth straight season.

“We’ll have some young, inexperienced players in certain spots, but we’ll still compete and play hard,” said Lori Salvo, who enters her fourth season as Davis’ coach. “We’re still going to give the region a run for its money.”

Among the quartet of seniors coming back are Kendall Sargent, Lexi Turner, Johanna Purdy and Breezy Roth.

Sargent, a setter for the Darts for the past three years, is expected to be the main leader on the squad and could also play some outside hitter.

Purdy will fill one of the voids left behind at the outside hitter position.

“We had Kaylie (Kamalu) and Camille Horrocks as two big outside hitters on the team,” said Salvo. “Filling all the holes there will be difficult for sure.”

Turner will, perhaps, help on that front. At 6-feet, 5-inches, the senior will likely see time at right side hitter and is expected to do big things.

Roth, the last of the quartet of seniors, will serve as a libero (defensive specialist) and has been a part of the Darts’ success in recent years.

“She was a huge part of the team the last two years when we won state and finished third,” said Salvo. “She’s a great softball player too, but we’re glad to have her back.”

Of the seven juniors set the take the floor, two will stand out.

Abbie Darling and Kenzie Nicol will see varsity time, and will try to fill in the rest of the holes on the team.

“They’re both strong, solid players,” said Salvo. “We also have five other juniors that are going to find out what it’s going to be like to compete in our region this year.”

The most exciting aspect to the region is the addition of Viewmont, a cross-town rival that was placed back in Region 1 after a two-year stint in Region 2.

Salvo said she’s happy to see them back, as it will make the region more competitive. She coached at Viewmont for 19 seasons before heading over to Davis, her alma mater.

“It’ll still feel weird to come back to that gym because I had been there for so long,” she said. “But with this being my fourth year (at Davis) it won’t be as strange because none of those players played for me.”

The ultimate goals for this year’s team is clear, however: defend the region title, and work hard for an opportunity to battle for a state title.

“We’re going to go with the players we have and see what happens,” said Salvo. “They’ve worked hard to become better players.”

Davis finished 32-2 overall in 2012, and placed third in the 5A playoffs.
