BOUNTIFUL — One student said she spent the night tossing and turning in anticipation of the first day of school.

Another said she had to try on five shirts and three scarves before she came up with the right combination to start the new year.

There was excitement in the air as an estimated 68,924 students returned to Davis County schools in force on Monday. A final count will be reported to the state on Oct. 1.

Though some were dragging their feet a bit, saying it was way too early and they wished they were back in bed, others expressed enthusiasm.

“It will be good to get back in it,” said one high school student. “It had to happen sometime. It will be good to see everyone again and get back to socializing.”

There were new backpacks, new shoes and new slacks. There were hugs, high-fives, waves and smiles.

As he greeted waves and waves of new and returning students, Spencer Hansen, principal at Centerville Junior High said things always go well at first, but can change fast if that locker combination doesn’t work or that room assignment gets changed.

“Summer was way too short,” said Anne Jeppesen, as she sat with her daughters, Jane and Margaret, waiting for school at Stewart Elementary to begin. Last year’s traditional calendar finished unusually late and this year started a bit early. “But school’s a good thing. We’re excited to get back.”
