The Salt Lake Comic Con, celebrating books, television, movies, comic books and more, opens today, Sept. 5, at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Panels will discuss everything from “Doctor Who” to the legend of Bigfoot, and special appearances will be made by well-known figures such as William Shatner, Adam West and more.
Shatner, known by millions as Captain Kirk from the original “Star Trek” TV series, will be presenting a guest panel at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Adam West, who played Batman in the original TV series, will host a guest panel with former sidekick Burt Ward at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Shatner and Ward will also host the Couch Party event starting at 6 p.m. Friday.
Other well-known figures scheduled to appear include Henry Winkler (“Arrested Development,” “Children’s Hospital), Ray Park (Darth Maul in “Star Wars,” Snake Eyes in “GI Joe: Insurrection”), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca in “Star Wars), Ally Condie (author of the “Matched” trilogy), Brandon Mull (author of the “Fablehaven” books) and much more. There are also plenty of discussion panels planned, designed to interest a wide variety of fans. A small sampling of these include the 50th anniversary of “Doctor Who” the comic book and movie histories of the Avengers and X-men, ghost hunting in Utah, the history of Bigfoot, and bound books compared to e-books.
For those looking for a taste of the real world, the convention is also offering a panel on how to present a successful project on crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter and Indigogo. A workshop on how to get chosen for reality TV shows will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Salt Palace. The cost to participate in the workshop is $20.
There will also be booths from a variety of artists, authors and fantasy- and science fiction-related businesses.
Tickets for the convention are $20 for Thursday only, $25 for Friday only and $30 for Saturday only. A three-day pass is $50, though photo opportunities with certain celebrities cost extra.
