SYRACUSE - Kaitlyn Burgess, a former student of interior design at Syracuse High, won first place at a national design competition in Nashville, Tenn. in July.

Burgess took first in the Interior Design STAR (Students Taking Action with Results) event at the state FCCLA competition last April.  FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

The state win earned Burgess an invitation to Nationals. Her first-place finish there resulted in $35,000 in scholarships, according to a press release.

Burgess has also been awarded a scholarship to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles.

“Kaitlyn is a wonderful student who is creative, articulate, very motivated and extremely talented,” said Valerie Veigel, Burgess’ former advisor at Syracuse High, in an email. “She has a keen eye for design and works well with combining textures, color and balance in her designs.”
