LAYTON — A man was critically injured Thursday when a live power line fell into road on a construction site, shocking him.

It happened just before 10 a.m. near Gentile and Chapel streets as crews attempted to load a trackhoe onto a truck, according to Layton Fire Department spokesman Doug Bitton.

The boom was lifted too high, severing the power line. It then fell to the ground, hitting the man, who had been working as the spotter.

The man was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

The wire also sparked a small grassfire and knocked out power to about 150 homes and businesses for about two hours. Gentile Street was closed for about 45 minutes.
