LAYTON - An 11-month-old girl is still in critical condition after allegedly being shaken by her mother’s boyfriend.
The infant, who was taken to the Davis Hospital emergency room Tuesday by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend, Tyler Ryan Geary, has since been transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital. Geary, who was arrested Tuesday as a suspect in the shaking, is currently out on bail.
“We’re not sure if she’s going to survive,” said Layton City Police Lt. Shawn Horton about the baby.
According to police, Geary had been babysitting the infant while his girlfriend was working. After becoming frustrated with the baby’s crying, he shook her and threw her on the bed.
While details about the infant’s condition are protected medical information, Horton said that brain bleeding is a common symptom of Shaken Baby Syndrome.
“What they have to do is open up the skull, let the brain bleed, and try to get the swelling down,” said Horton. “Even if she survives, they’re not going to know for some time how severe the brain injury is and how much it will impact her functioning.”
