KAYSVILLE — The Viewmont girls’ soccer team may have taken the opening game in soccer, but the volleyball team had the last word on the court last week.
In an early battle between a pair of Region 1 teams, the Lady Darts volleyball team picked up the Region 1 opener with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22) victory.
Johanna Purdy led the Darts with a solid overall effort on the floor. Purdy finished with 11 kills, 18 digs and one ace, and Kendall Sargent had seven kills, 16 digs and 20 assists.
For Viewmont, Amanda Varley led the way with 12 kills, two aces and four blocks (all solo), and Emily Madsen added seven kills and 31 digs in the loss.
For the Darts, the win was only their third of the season after piling up 32 wins in 2012. The loss for Viewmont is its third overall.
The Lady Vikings finished the Hunter Tournament 5-2, and then beat Granger in nonregion play before facing Davis.
Except for the lone region game that was already on the books, all four south Davis County teams kicked off the volleyball season this week.
Davis will have a match against Northridge Thursday afternoon at Northridge High School. It will be the first match in eight days for the Darts.
The Lady Vikings will face Weber on the road the same day.
In Region 6, Woods Cross got its season started with a match on Tuesday against Cyprus and will travel to East High School to face the Leopards Thursday afternoon.
Bountiful played its first match in 10 days on Tuesday against Highland to open its region schedule. The Lady Braves will battle Region 6 newcomer Judge Memorial Thursday afternoon at home.
Davis and Viewmont will begin their matches at 3:30 p.m. Bountiful and Woods Cross will play at 5:15 p.m.
