CENTERVILLE — Centerville police took a man into custody Thursday afternoon after three women took it upon themselves to step in and stop an alleged purse thief.

At 5:13 p.m., a woman was renting a movie at the Red Box kiosk in front of Dick’s Market, 84 W. Parrish Lane, when she dropped her glasses. The suspect standing in line behind her bent to pick them up and handed them to her, Child said.

The woman’s purse was in a nearby cart, and the man allegedly took the purse and ran, Child said.

A woman in the parking lot witnessed the theft and tried to stop the suspect, ripping a piece of his shirt off in the process, Child said. Another woman followed him on foot into a residential area north of the store. Meanwhile, a third woman followed him in her vehicle. The women watched as the man ran into a side yard of a home, they told police.

“When police arrived, they were able to locate him,” Child said. “He refused to comply and after a short scuffle, officers arrested him.”

The women’s actions helped police find and arrest the suspect, Child said.

Sterling Martin, 41, of Centerville, was arrested and booked into the Davis County Jail, according to Centerville Assistant Police Chief Paul Child. Martin faces possible charges of theft and resisting arrest. He also allegedly has two outstanding warrants.
