WOODS CROSS — Woods Cross High School graduate Landon Oswald is the 2013 recipient of the Dion J. Stephenson Memorial Scholarship.

His aunt, Corrie Peay, was the first recipient of the award in 1992.

While still in elementary school, Oswald entered the PTA Reflections contest with an essay, “Freedom Is Not Free.”

He and his family attended the 2001 Memorial Day ceremony at the Bountiful Cemetery, where a plaque honoring Marine Lance Cpl. Dion J. Stephenson was presented.

“I have a deep respect for the many brave men and women who gave their lives in defense of our country,” Oswald said. “I also recognize my duty to honor them by being a good citizen.”

Oswald plans to attend the University of Utah in the fall, majoring in exercise and sports science. He then plans to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The scholarship is in memory of Stephenson, a 1987 graduate of Woods Cross High School and the first Utahn killed in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. It is awarded annually to a senior who has demonstrated patriotism, athletic involvement and humanitarian efforts.

Tax deductible donations to the fund can be made by contacting Geri Stephenson at 801-298-7675 or the Davis Education Foundation at 801-402-4483.
