SYRACUSE — A 10-year-old boy escaped from a burning home near 3800 West and 1800 South on Saturday afternoon, but not before the blaze destroyed the attic and top floor of his home.

The boy was home alone at the time and was not injured, said Syracuse Fire Chief Eric Froerer. His mother, father and siblings returned home later.

“It was quite a spectacular incident for the surrounding neighbors,” he said. “We’re just glad there’s no loss of life.”

The fire destroyed the roof and water damage and parts of the second and third floors, and water damage that resulted from it harmed the first floor but left the basement in good shape.

Froerer estimated the damage at $250,000. The fire will be classified as accidental, but authorities aren’t certain how it started.
