Planet Fitness, bakery coming to Fresh Market space

BOUNTIFUL — New businesses are coming to the old Fresh Market location on the southeast corner of 200 West and 500 South in Bountiful.

Construction is underway now in the old store’s space and at least one new tenant is expected to break ground, possibly later this fall.  

The county’s first Planet Fitness 24-hour gym will be in the south portion of the old Fresh Market space.

Pending Bountiful City Planning Commission approval, a new Corner Bakery store that could be built adjacent to Carl’s Junior. It could open as early as Spring, said Joel Larson, chief financial officer of Wasatch Property Management.

Other changes are also in the works, he said.

Talks continue with tenants for the remainder of the Fresh Market building, but no agreements have been made.

However, Pizza Hut will continue at its free-standing location southwest of Fresh Market.

The adjacent Blockbuster’s liquidation runs through Oct. 25, a manager said early Tuesday afternoon.

Carl’s Junior is continuing operations as normal.

“The city is really excited about what they’re proposing. We can’t wait until they come in with their proposals and make it happen,” said Aric Jensen, Bountiful city planner.

Wasatch Property Management is on the Oct. 15 Bountiful City Planning Commission agenda to seeking a conditional use permit to operate a thrift store in the old Fresh Market building, Jensen said.

The company has applied for a building permit to make interior improvements to the existing building, he said.

Larson would not confirm a thrift store is moving in, but said negotiations are continuing.

Battle of the sandwich shops

The Corner Bakery’s closest location is in the Foothill area of Salt Lake City, far from Bountiful’s historic Main Street.

But its proposed location near 200 West poses new competition for Cutler’s Cookies and Sandwiches, said Sandra Cutler, who started the business in 1984 with her husband, Richard.

That cookie store is at 142 W. 500 South and a sandwich and cookie shop of theirs is at 120 W. 500 South.

“I know there’s nothing we can do about it,”  Sandra Cutler said. “We started on Main Street about 30 years ago. It was so different. There weren’t any sandwich shops.”

Since then, Paradise Bakery and Kneaders have opened shop in town, both offering cookies, sandwiches and other menu choices.

“I roll with it,” she said. “They have a lot of money.”

Kneader’s started in Utah County but has rapidly expanded in the past few years and has opened a North Salt Lake store.

“It just keeps us on our toes to do the best we can,” Cutler said.

 Corner Bakery was started in Chicago in 1991 and it has grown to 152 locations. An Atlanta-based private equity firm owns it.

 Cutler’s customers often order cookies with their sandwiches and can often get free cookies via texting.

It is a casual eatery where people pay at the counter, wait for their sandwiches, and can eat at a few tables or on stools at a counter.

Co-founder Richard Cutler still does maintenance, “running around, making sure everything is available every day.”

Sons of the Cutlers manage stores in Centerville and Layton. The 120 W. 500 South Bountiful location prepares cookie dough, a popular fundraising tool for youth groups, and sells cookies.

Bountiful’s downtown is less than two blocks away from Cutler’s and Fresh Market, but the Bountiful Downtown Merchants Association, isn’t worried much about serious impact on downtown businesses, said Mike Murphy, president.

“It’s far enough removed from Main Street it’s not within our scope,” he said. “I think people like the ambience of Main Street. “We try to per perpetuate activities unique to us.”
