KAYSVILLE — For the first time in three years, the Davis High School and Viewmont High School football teams will square off as Region 1 foes at Friday night’s Homecoming Game at Davis.

But the teams are heading in opposite directions as kickoff approaches.

Davis, at 5-0, has the best scoring defense in all of 5A and will look to run its winning streak to six games.

The Vikings, losers of four straight, are still working on getting the right pieces in place as they head into Friday night’s game with the Darts.

For Darts coach Ryan Bishop, the focus isn’t so much on the opponent, but rather how the team improves.

“We actually don’t talk about who our opponent is from week to week,” he said. “Our main focus is on us and to try to get better from week to week, game to game.”

Bishop said it’s difficult to look at one opponent at a time in region play because every opponent “has a rivalry game feel to it,” and each team is tough from top to bottom in Region 1.

“Having been in this region for so long, I can tell you that every team we play is tough,” he said. “Regardless of what both team’s record is, our region is probably the most competitively balanced. I can’t speak for all the coaches, but I think that’s what most of them believe.”

Through five games, the Darts defense has allowed an average of seven points per game. Fremont’s 14 points last week are the most the Darts have allowed this season, and Bishop gave credit to his entire defensive coaching staff for having the team prepared for every opponent.

“I really like the way we’ve prepared, and every week the defensive coaches have done an excellent job,” he said. “The defense is playing well across the front, and we are continuing to do what we need to do to win games in this region.”

That doesn’t mean, however, the team is flawless just because their record is.

Bishop said there still are some concerns over certain aspects of the team, such as running the ball better and playing better on special teams, but believes that all the areas can be fixed over time.

“All these teams are so familiar with each other that you can start to see some tendencies in each of them,” he said. “We’ve gone with the approach that we will improve on ourselves as a team every week, and we’ll hopefully continue to be successful during the season.”

The Vikings are hoping to not only put an end to a four-game skid this season, but also hope to put an end to a three-game losing streak against the Darts.

The last time Viewmont beat Davis came during the 2009 season. The Vikings won 24-21 and made the playoffs.

Kick off will be at Davis High School at 7 p.m.
