WOODS CROSS — Longtime law enforcement officer Leslie Niles Stahle, “Niles” to most who knew him, died Sunday of a heart attack. He was 74.

Stahle was known through much of the county for his service in law enforcement, working a total of 48 years to protect residents of Bountiful, Woods Cross and Davis County.

He began his law enforcement career with the Bountiful Police Department. Then, became Woods Cross City’s town marshall in 1960.

“He was kind of my mentor,” said retired Woods Cross Police Chief Paul Howard. “He gave me the opportunity to get into police work and was a good example.”

Howard replaced Stahle as chief when Stahle retired from the Woods Cross police force in 1989.

“He was always fair and treated everybody with compassion,” Howard said.

A history of the Wood Cross Police Department said that when Stahle and a deputy were first appointed, they were part time. Both men supplied their own vehicles and gas.

“There was no radio communication between officers. However, the city did supply them ticket books and a few arm patches,” the history said.

Stahle also worked with the South Davis Fire District, running the ambulance service from his home for a number of years. He retired from the department while serving as assistant chief, Stahle’s obituary said.

In 1990, Stahle went to work for the Davis County Sheriff’s Office, where he served in a variety of positions until his retirement there in 2005.

His hobbies included working with youth in football and baseball programs. He also loved his farm and horses, his obituary said.

Stahle is survived by his wife, Claudene; children: Brenda (Mark) Jones, Julie (Brent) White, Leslie (Elise) Stahle, Brian (Chelsey) Stahle, Jennifer (Robert) Zuspan; step-children, Lisa (Delray) Perkins, Scot Lee (Jennifer) Whetman, Stephanie (Scott) Olsen, 32-grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his siblings J. Howard Stahle, Dean S. Stahle, Merna S. Johnson, P. Larry Stahle and R. Gail Stahle.

The funeral will be on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Woods Cross 10th LDS Ward building, 1335 W. 1500 South, Woods Cross. A viewing will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 6–8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary and at the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
