BOUNTIFUL – Neighbors and friends are rallying around the family of 3-year-old Courtney Simon, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Courtney was found to have rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer that affects connective tissue. A 5K run and silent auction are being held on Saturday, Oct. 26, to help with expenses not covered by insurance.

The HERO Foundation is sponsoring the event, which will be held at Skills Fitness, 1525 N. Main in Bountiful. The foundation stands for “Helping Everyone Reach Out,” and was established by Emily Jeppesen of Fruit Heights in 2005 to help families with children under 12 who are faced with life-threatening illnesses.

“This gives the community something to do in a crisis,” said Jeppesen, who got to know Courtney’s mother, Lindsey, in a class Jeppeson teaches at the fitness center.

“We kind of try to get the whole community together,” said Jeppeson. “All the volunteers are from their community. Doing this helps out emotionally as well.”

Some shots that are part of Courtney’s treatment are not covered by insurance, said Jeppeson and one, which costs $6,000, has to be given once a week.

The family has expressed gratitude for the ongoing support.

“We moved to Farmington three years ago after hearing it was a good place to live with great people,” said Lindsey Simon, as quoted in a flyer promoting the event. “We are amazed at what good-hearted people we live with in our community.”

Registration for the 5K run begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The run and the auction start at 9 a.m. A carnival with face painting, vendors and a visit from Courtney’s hero, Rapunzel, are also part of the morning event.
