LAYTON —  Fiction often predicts the future better than a psychic ever could.

Author and Bountiful native Katherine Hether, who is coming to the Layton Barnes and Noble on Oct. 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. to sign copies of her new book, knows that firsthand. Though Hether wrote the first draft of “Project Chameleon: The Adventures of Kathe Tierney” more than 20 years ago, it features several familiar elements that were unheard of a generation ago.

“They didn’t exist,” said Hether. “Kathe had a phone she could hang from her belt, even though cell phones back then were enormous. She could talk on it without using her hands, which is like Bluetooth. Anti-terrorist agents weren’t a common sight at airports back then, but I have them in the book.”

The novel, which will be the first of a series, features a divorced mother of three who takes a job as an anti-terrorist agent at the airport. At the urging of an acquaintance, Hether rewrote the book and released it.

“I couldn’t really get it off the ground at the time, because it was too scifi,” she said. “But she said, ‘You’ve really got to redo this.”

Hether is also working on a line of children’s books, inspired by stories written for her children’s school classes when they were younger.

“I’d ask the teachers what they were studying,” said Hether. “Then I told them I could take them to a different world.”

Barnes and Noble is located at 1780 N. Woodland Park Drive in Layton. For more information, visit katherinehether.com.
