BOUNTIFUL — A man who tried to steal a woman’s purse Saturday got a response he hadn’t expected and wound up booked into jail on aggravated robbery charges.

The woman was in the parking lot of Smith’s Marketplace, 555 S. 200 West, in Bountiful, on Saturday, Nov. 2, about 9:40 a.m. when Daniel Max Lopez, 32, walked up and allegedly demanded her purse, according to Assistant Bountiful Police Chief Ed Biehler.

Lopez allegedly threatened to shoot the woman if she didn’t turn her purse over to him, Biehler said.

“She did what we tell people not to do, she told him, ‘Pull it out and go for it,’”  Biehler said.

Her reply startled Lopez who then ran off. He allegedly got into a car with two others and the woman ran back into the store where she reported the attempted robbery. The store manager then called police.

Officers were nearby, Biehler said, and were there before Lopez and the others could drive away.

Lopez was booked into the Davis County Jail on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated robbery and on three outstanding warrants.

One of the passengers in Lopez’s car was taken into custody on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, Biehler said.

No one was hurt.
