CENTERVILLE – Whitaker Museum is getting into the holiday spirit.

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the museum will hold its final day of this year’s “Christmas at the Whitaker,” from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to the usual museum tour, there will be Christmas music, treats, and activities for the kids. Admission is free.

“We just want to keep the community spirit alive,” said Whitaker Museum Director Lisa Sommer.

In addition to a Christmas story, kids will be able to make an ornament to take home. There will also be cookies.

“It’s on a really small scale this year, because this is our first year,” said Sommer.

The museum, which had its grand re-opening this past March after years of renovations, has begun sponsoring a variety of holiday activities. It held a Mother’s Day afternoon tea this past spring, and in October it sponsored “Haunting at Whitaker.” The event, which was held in conjunction with Centerville City’s Pumpkin Walk, had more than 500 guests.

“It was lots of fun,” said Sommer. “We’ll do it over and over again.”

As they move into 2014, museum organizers plan on expanding Whitaker’s activities even further. Though there are no details yet, residents should check out for updates.

“We’re slowly adding more and more events,” she said.

The museum has had 1,700 guests since this past March, several of whom were drawn in by an article in AAA magazine. A silk wedding dress made by a former owner of the Whitaker House will be on display with the Utah Symphony early next year, likely drawing even more people.

“We had a guest from Norway ask for one of our souvenir buttons,” said Sommer. “The word’s getting out.”
