BOUNTIFUL – A 12 point lead after three quarters nearly turned into an overtime affair for the Viewmont Vikings girls’ basketball team Tuesday night.
But the Springville Red Devils’ fourth quarter charge was cut short before the final buzzer, and the Vikings were able to pick up their sixth straight win in a 48-44 battle.
Viewmont started the game on a scoring streak, and Katie Toole led the charge. Toole’s nine-point first quarter elevated the rest of the Lady Vikings to score eight points, and Viewmont held an 11-point lead after the opening frame.
On defense, the Lady Vikings allowed 17 first half points and took a seven point halftime lead due to its full court pressure against Springville. The Red Devils only scored six points in the first quarter, and fell behind by 12 points after scoring five points in the third quarter.
The defense for Viewmont, in combination with the lack of conversions at the free-throw line, nearly had the Red Devils on upset alert as they continued to battle back into the game.
With only a minute remaining in the game, Springville closed the gap to just three points. Caitlyn Larsen, who scored 12 points on the night, had difficulty shooting from the free-throw line in the closing minutes.
She was 1-for-5 in the closing moments, but the one late free throw gave the Vikings just enough of a cushion to close out a comeback attempt.
Springville’s Brooke Wheeler and Lydia Austin were difficult to stop in the second half in the near-comeback. The duo combined for 26 points in the loss.
Larsen finished the game with 12 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals in the win. Toole led all scorers with 20 points, and had six rebounds and five steals.
Sky Fenwick scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds.
The Lady Vikings will head to Phoenix, Ariz. for the Tournament of Champions event starting Thursday. The tournament will run through the weekend.
The Lady Vikings are 6-0 to start the season for the second season in a row.
