BOUNTIFUL - The hardest part of doing anything creative is getting started.
If you’ve resolved to let your artistic inspiration fly but need some help getting it off the ground, art classes are one way to help take that first step. Both the Lamplight Gallery in Bountiful and the Bountiful/Davis Art Center in Farmington are offering an assortment of winter classes.
“BDAC gave me the opportunity to meet and learn from many talented local artists,” said Glen Hawkins, a professional artist.
At Lamplight, artist Nora Del Murdock offers ongoing one-on-one instruction every Monday and Saturday on anything from drawing to oil painting. Though she’s also taught traditional classes, she said that one-on-one teaching can be more helpful for certain students.
“You can start at their level and go on,” said Murdock. “They can ask a lot of questions, and you can help them with their particular problem.”
For those who don’t need that kind of immediate attention, the Bountiful/Davis Art Center offers an assortment of winter classes in a variety of mediums starting in mid-January.
If watercolor painting is what interests you, Denise Jones is teaching a class on the basics of watercolor while Sherry Meidell guides students through both sketching and painting. Simon Winegar will focus on oil painting while covering art foundations for serious beginners.
Sarah Jo Harrison will teach a variety of mediums using master studies, a technique where beginning painters learn about their art by copying the works of the old masters.
If you already have artistic experience and simply want to refine your technique, artist Diane Turner has taught an advanced landscape oil class for the last several years. This season’s class starts Jan. 14.
