LAYTON - Those who have lost a loved one to suicide know all too well the pain survivors feel.

To help those who have lost a loved one cope, a new monthly suicide survivor support group is forming with meetings planned at the Davis County Central Library. The group, open to all Davis County residents, will be a place for the bereaved to share their experiences.

“Survivors learn that they are not alone as they share their stories and learn from others in a safe, supportive environment,” said Isa Perry, community outreach planner for the Davis County Health Department.

Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in Davis County, according to a press release from the department. The American Association of Suicidology estimates that for every suicide there are six survivors.

The support group is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). It will meet on the second Thursday of each month from 6-7:30 p.m. in the central branch library auditorium, 155 Wasatch Drive in Layton, beginning on Jan. 9.

The group will be led by a trained volunteer, who is also a suicide survivor.

"In 2013, the Davis County Health Department conducted a community health assessment and community health improvement process in which suicide was identified as the number one health issue facing residents of Davis County,” Perry said.

“Community partners have come together to develop a community health improvement plan to address and prevent suicide deaths throughout the county,” she said. “One important component is to provide resources to those touched by suicide.”
